HC Deb 24 March 1938 vol 333 cc1349-51
6. Mr. Emery

asked the Home Secretary the number of adult aliens resident in Great Britain, at the most convenient date, giving comparative figures for the previous 12 months?

Sir S. Hoare

As the answer includes a number of figures, I will, with my hon. Friend's permission, circulate it in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

Mr. T. Williams

Do the figures include persons resident in this country for 50 years who have not yet been naturalised?

Sir S. Hoare

I could not say without notice.

Mr. James Griffiths

Do the figures show the number of aliens coming here from particular countries within the last few months?

Sir S. Hoare

I should like the hon. Member to see the figures, and then, if he will put a question down, I will give him an answer.

Following is the answer:

The number of aliens over 16 years of age registered with the police in May, 1937, was 193,653, of whom 101,062 were males and 92,591 females. The corresponding number registered in May, 1936, was 186,668, of whom 101,269 were males and 85,399 females.
