HC Deb 21 March 1938 vol 333 cc816-7
1. Mr. Thorne

asked the Prime Minister how many countries have left the League of Nations since 1931; how many are now members; and whether His Majesty's Government will at the next meeting of the League raise the question of the present position of Austria with regard to membership of the League?

The Prime Minister (Mr. Chamberlain)

Eight members of the League have given notice of withdrawal since 1931, and in the case of three of these members the period of notice has expired. There are now 58 members. With regard to the future position of Austria in relation to the League, this will no doubt have to be considered, but I see no reason why His Majesty's Government should raise it.

Mr. Thorne

May I take it for granted that when the question is raised at the League the whole financial position of Austria will be considered at the same time on account of her monetary obligations?

4. Miss Rathbone

asked the Prime Minister what communications have been received from other States members of the League indicating their intention to limit their liabilities under the Covenant following on his declaration of the inability of the League to protect small weak nations from aggression, and from whom these communications were received?

The Prime Minister

No communications of the character referred to by the hon. Member have been received.

Miss Rathbone

Does the Prime Minister mean that no communications have been received by Great Britain or the League? Has not the League received intimations from several of the minor Powers that they are reconsidering their position?

The Prime Minister

I understood the hon. Lady to mean communications to His Majesty's Government.

Miss Rathbone

I meant communications to the League.

The Prime Minister

I could not answer that without notice.
