HC Deb 21 March 1938 vol 333 c841
46. Mr. Hannah

asked the Prime Minister whether he will consider the question of giving the representatives of the Dominions in London ambassadorial status and some right to be consulted in the foreign policy of the Empire?

The Prime Minister

His Majesty's Government in the United Kingdom fully recognise the importance of the position of the Dominion High Commissioners as the representatives in London of other Governments in the British Commonwealth. The status now accorded to the High Commissioners was determined in 1930 as the result of discussions at the Imperial Conference held that year. I am sending to my hon. Friend the relevant extract from the Summary of Proceedings of the Conference. I would add that His Majesty's Government are most ready to communicate with, and consult, the High Commissioners on any matter of common concern to the fullest extent which the respective Governments may desire.

Sir Ronald Ross

Will the Prime Minister bear in mind, when consulting the Government of the Irish Free State, that that Dominion is supporting the Government of General Franco, and has already recognised the Italian conquest of Abyssinia?
