HC Deb 21 March 1938 vol 333 cc829-30
28. Mr. Day

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he can make any statement as to the progress made in arranging and sanctioning schemes for the improvement of fishing harbours?

The Minister of Agriculture (Mr. W. S. Morrison)

The initiation of schemes for the improvement of fishing harbours in England and Wales rests with the local harbour authorities, or other appropriate local bodies, and the functions of my Department in relation to such schemes are limited to advising the Development Commission in those cases where application is made for financial assistance from the Development Fund, and general supervision of the carrying out of schemes approved for grant or loan.

Mr. Day

Have any instructions been given to engineers to inspect these harbours?

Mr. Morrison

Initiation in this matter rests with the local harbour authorities. My functions in the matter are purely advisory.
