HC Deb 17 March 1938 vol 333 cc565-6
7. Mr. Malcolm MacMillan

asked the Minister of Labour how many seamen and officers, respectively, in the Mercantile Marine were unemployed in 1931 and 1935, and how many there are at present?

Mr. E. Brown

Statistics of the numbers of unemployed seamen are compiled only at quarterly dates. The number of wholly unemployed men aged 18 years and over registered at Employment Exchanges as applicants for employment as seamen at 6th December, 1937, the latest date for which such figures are available, was 24,389. The corresponding figures for 2nd December, 1935, and 20th October, 1931, were 34,159 and 41,272 respectively. Separate figures are not available for officers.
