HC Deb 15 March 1938 vol 333 cc211-2
58. Mr. Mander

asked the Prime Minister whether he will consider the advisability of approaching the other signatories of the Aland Islands convention, signed on 20th October, 1921, with a view to the rigid application of its terms of non-fortification, in consequence of German Government pressure in favour of fortification?

Mr. Butler

I have no reason to suppose that the terms of this Convention will not continue to be scrupulously respected by the Finnish Government.

Mr. Mander

Will my hon. Friend bear in mind that there is reason to believe that this is another attempt at power politics on the part of Germany, and will he take the same firm attitude with regard to this as was disclosed by the Prime Minister yesterday?

Mr. Butler

The Government can always be relied upon to adopt a firm attitude.
