§ 11. Mr. Burkeasked the Prime Minister whether he has any statement to make regarding the assault by a Japanese sentry upon a British missionary; whether representations have been made to the Japanese Government; and, if so, with what result?
§ Mr. ButlerI understand that a British subject, Mr. Jowett Murray, was struck on the head by a Japanese sentry on 20th 10 February at Tsangchow, a town in Hopei on the Tientsin-Pukow Railway, for refusing to bow when passing the city gate. A complaint was at once made to the Japanese Embassy in Peking. I have no report that any reply has yet been received.
§ Miss WilkinsonHave His Majesty's Government now received the requisite apology from the Japanese Government for having hit a British subject on the head?
§ Mr. ButlerAs I have informed the House, a complaint was at once made, and I am still awaiting a reply.
