HC Deb 14 March 1938 vol 333 cc14-5
25. Colonel Wedgwood

asked the Postmaster-General whether it was on his instructions, either particular or in general, that the proposed broadcast by the right hon. and gallant Member for Newcastle-under-Lyme on Thursday, 24th February, was cancelled?

The Postmaster-General (Major Tryon)

No, Sir.

Colonel Wedgwood

I am circulating a copy of the broadcast to Members of the House. May I ask whether in future the democratic Minister responsible cannot be the one to ban or censor Members of this honourable House, instead of leaving it to the officials of an organisation without our responsibilities, and whose sympathies may well be with the dictators and with Rome?

Major Tryon

That would alter the practice of successive Governments, and would be contrary to the recent decision of the House of Commons.

Mr. Leach

If the right hon. and gallant Member in his broadcast had introduced a little delicate smut, would he have got it through?
