HC Deb 22 June 1938 vol 337 c1051
5. Mr. Arthur Henderson

asked the Prime Minister whether the British representative in Mexico City has now reported to His Majesty's Government; and whether an attempt is to be made to settle the differences between His Majesty's Government and the Mexican Government?

Mr. Butler

Yes, Sir. His Majesty's Government are most anxious to effect a fair and reasonable settlement of their differences with the Mexican Government resulting from the expropriation of the British-controlled oil properties. Unfortunately, however, the attitude of the Mexican Government, culminating in the suspension of diplomatic relations, has so far precluded such a settlement.

Mr. Henderson

Do the Government intend to make contact with the Mexican Government, either directly or indirectly, with a view to securing a settlement?

Mr. Butler

I think we must hope that the Mexican Government will modify their own attitude in the matter.
