HC Deb 21 June 1938 vol 337 c869
14. Mr. Levy

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware of the increasing quantities of imports of cheap wool yarns at prices at which our spinners cannot compete; and what action he proposes to take in the matter.

The President of the Board of Trade (Mr. Oliver Stanley)

Certain complaints of foreign competition in woollen and worsted yarns have been brought to my notice, but, although imports from one source have increased, the total imports of such yarns in the first five months of this year were less than in the corresponding period of last year. Any question of an increase in the import duty is a matter for consideration in the first place by the Import Duties Advisory Committee.

Mr. Leach

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that this country is unequalled in the production of cheap woollen yarns of any price, and that this question must refer to some foreign yarns?
