HC Deb 21 June 1938 vol 337 c872
25. Sir John Haslam

asked the President of the Board of Trade the total amount of export trade in 1936 and 1937 between Japan and the Crown Colonies?

Mr. Stanley

The value of exports from Japan to such Crown Colonies as are specified in the Japanese trade returns, was 196.4 million yen in 1936 and 222.9 million yen in 1937. It is probable that exports to the Crown Colonies which are not so specified are relatively unimportant.

Sir J. Haslam

Does my right hon. Friend realise that a good deal of this is at the expense of Lancashire, and that we should like to see an alteration in the policy?

Mr. Stanley

Obviously, we want to do everything we can to help Lancashire, but I cannot quite accept my hon. Friend's statement. I must point out that during the same period the exports of United Kingdom goods to Crown Colonies rose by no less than £10,000,000.
