HC Deb 21 June 1938 vol 337 cc882-3
51. Mr. Jenkins

asked the Secretary of State for War the average cost per student per year in the Beachley Army School for Boys?

Mr. Hore-Belisha

The estimated average cost for each boy is £126 a year, or, if the rental value of the school and the Treasury contribution in lieu of rates are added, £138 a year each.

Mr. Jenkins

Does not the right hon. Gentleman think that much of this work might be done under the education authorities of the country in technical schools much better than it is done at this school?

Mr. Hore-Belisha

That had not occurred to me, and I should be most happy if the hon. Gentleman would send me his suggestions.

Mr. J. Griffiths

Will the right hon. Gentleman convey this information to a number of his hon. Friends who think that local authorities have been extravagant in regard to the education of the working class?
