HC Deb 21 June 1938 vol 337 cc870-1
19. Mr. Sexton

asked the President of the Board of Trade the total value of armaments, with their description, exported from Tyne ports, and the countries of destination during 1935, 1936, and 1937, respectively?

Mr. Stanley

The total declared value of arms, ammunition and military and naval stores of United Kingdom manufacture, exported from Newcastle, North Shields and South Shields, was £104,000 in 1935, £68,000 in 1936 and £11,000 in 1937, but particulars of the descriptions of goods included in these figures are not readily available. Details of consignments from individual ports to individual countries could not now be compiled in respect of 1935 and 1936, and their compilation for 1937 would involve an unjustifiable expenditure of time and labour.

Mr. Sexton

Seeing that in the Great War British-made arms were used against British forces, will the right hon. Gentleman advise a national prohibition on the export of arms?
