HC Deb 15 June 1938 vol 337 c210
34. Mr. Kennedy

asked the Secretary of State for Air whether his attention has been called to the conviction at Brighton on 2nd June of a leading aircraftman and accounts clerk of the Royal Air Force, Hendon, for cruelty to his seven-years-old son, the cruelty including the taking and holding red-hot coals from the fire; is he aware that a pilot officer from Tangmere aerodrome gave evidence in court describing the convicted man as a man holding the highest character in the Royal Air Force and that a sentence of imprisonment would involve his dismissal from the Service, and that a fine was imposed payable within one month; and whether the man in question is to be allowed to remain in the service of the Royal Air Force?

Sir K. Wood

Yes, Sir. The airman concerned will be discharged from the Service.

Mr. Kennedy

Will any provision be made by the Ministry to protect the interests of the man's wife and son?

Sir K. Wood

There will be a Service gratuity, and he will be placed in benefit under the Unemployment Insurance Act.
