HC Deb 14 June 1938 vol 337 cc3-4
2. Mr. Day

asked the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs whether, in connection with emigration, he will give particulars of the number of residential training centres for women in which His Majesty's Government in the United Kingdom are co-operating in the maintenance of same; and how many posts have been found for persons who completed such training for overseas employment for the 12 months ended at the last convenient date?

The Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs (Lord Stanley)

There are at present no residential centres in the United Kingdom for training women for employment overseas. The United Kingdom Government formerly assisted to maintain a number of such centres, but on the suspension of assisted migration they were either closed down or used for the purpose of providing domestic training for women for employment in this country. If and when the volume of migration again justifies it, consideration will be given to the question of restoring such facilities.

Mr. Day

Can the Noble Lord say whether the system worked satisfactorily?

Lord Stanley

I understand quite satisfactorily.
