§ 24. Mr. Henderson Stewartasked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he can now make a report on the progress of the Empire Exhibition in Glasgow?
§ Mr. ColvilleI am informed that the total attendance since the Exhibition was opened by His Majesty The King on 3rd May up to yesterday has been 2,945,752. In addition to parties coming from practically every part of the United Kingdom, there have been many visitors from overseas, and exhibitors report good business inquiries. No less than 72 trade congresses are being held in the Exhibition, some of them international in scope. Present indications appear to give promise that the Exhibition will justify to the full the hopes of its promoters.
§ Mr. BuchananIs the right hon. Gentleman aware that certain workers employed at the Exhibition are receiving scandalously low wages, and in view of the answer given to me a week last Wednesday by the Minister of Labour, will he make representations to see that these wages are brought up to a proper standard?
§ Mr. ColvilleThat is a matter with which I am not personally familiar, but I will look at the question to which the hon. Member refers.
Mr. DavidsonIs it the object of the Exhibition authorities to make a large surplus out of the Exhibition, or just to carry on the general work without making any?
§ Mr. ColvilleWe must wait and see the results.
