HC Deb 01 June 1938 vol 336 cc2030-1
37. Mr. Creech Jones

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies, in how many cases have proceedings been instituted for sedition in each of the West Indian Colonies since the last legislative measure concerning sedition in such colony, and under what provisions have such prosecutions been undertaken, respectively; how many convictions have been recorded; and what sentences have been imposed in each case?

Mr. M. MacDonald

I regret that the information for which the hon. Member asks is not available.

Mr. Creech Jones

Will the right hon. Gentleman notify the local governors that in regard to the exercise of seditious legislation some tolerance and discrimination should be shown, in view of the growth of prosecutions in recent years?

Mr. MacDonald

I am sure that our governors exercise a wise discretion under this legislation.

Mr. Creech Jones

Not in Barbados.
