HC Deb 26 July 1938 vol 338 cc2890-1
30. Sir Percy Hurd

asked the President of the Board of Trade the wholesale and retail prices, respectively, in London, of first quality English lamb and first quality Canterbury lamb, respectively, at the latest available date as compared with the corresponding date of last year?

Mr. Stanley

The average wholesale price of first quality English lamb in London during the week ended 20th July, 1938, was 10d. per lb., as compared with 0½d. per 1b. in the corresponding week of 1937. The average wholesale price of first quality New Zealand lamb was 8d. per 1b. in both weeks. There are no official quotations of retail prices of lamb, but retail prices of English lamb at certain London stores last week ranged from 6 per cent. to 3o per cent. lower than in the corresponding week of 1937, while there was little change in the retail prices of Canterbury lamb.

Sir P. Hurd

Has the attention of the Food Council been called to the curious discrepancies which arise?

Mr. Stanley

I will bring the matter to their notice.
