HC Deb 20 July 1938 vol 338 c2203
88. Mr. Kirby

asked the Minister of Health whether he has received from the corporation of Liverpool any reply to his letter, dated 30th May last, addressed to them on the subject of the proposed closing of four day nurseries; and, if so, whether he will state the nature of the reply?

Mr. Bernays

Yes, Sir. The corporation have informed my right hon. Friend that, after further consideration, they have decided to re-affirm their previous decision as to the closing of these nurseries.

Mr. Kirby

Is it not possible for the Department to bring some pressure to bear on the corporation in this matter?

Mr. Bernays

As the hon. Member knows, my right hon. Friend has asked the corporation to reconsider their decision, but, in fact, the matter, of course, is one entirely within their discretion.

Mr. Logan

Is the Minister bringing any pressure to bear on the corporation?
