HC Deb 28 February 1938 vol 332 c739
37. Mr. J. Griffiths

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether his attention has been called to the depression that has recently taken place in the tinplate industry, and to the serious unemployment caused thereby, in South Wales and elsewhere; whether he can give any reasons for this depression; and what steps he is taking to deal with the matter?

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Trade (Captain Euan Wallace)

I am aware that there has recently been some diminution of activity in the tin-plate industry and an increase in unemployment. I understand that this is attributed to a slackening in the demand in certain export markets on account of trade depression in the countries concerned, and to the disturbed international situation.
