HC Deb 24 February 1938 vol 332 cc550-1
87. Mr. Lunn

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he is aware of the condition of many small farmers in the West Riding of Yorkshire whose holdings are being allowed to become derelict; and whether he will institute an inquiry into the causes and consider what action is necessary to remedy the position?

Mr. W. S. Morrison

I have received from the county council of the East Riding of Yorkshire a copy of a resolution passed by the council relative to the condition of certain classes of small farmers in the county. The resolution is receiving my consideration, but I am doubtful whether any useful purpose would be served by an inquiry of the nature to which the hon. Member refers.

Mr. Lunn

Can the right hon. Gentleman suggest any other means by which these people can bring forward complaints and have them dealt with?

Mr. Morrison

I am always ready to consider any complaints which are made to me, but on my preliminary investigation it appears that the condition of these farmers depends very largely upon general agricultural conditions in this country
