HC Deb 22 February 1938 vol 332 cc166-7
22 and 23. Mr. Shinwell

asked the President of the Board of Trade (1) the value of United Kingdom goods exported in 1937 to Spanish territory occupied by the insurgents, and the amount already paid to British exporters;

(2) the value of United Kingdom goods exported in 1937 to Spanish republican territory; and the amount already paid to British exporters?

Mr. Stanley

During the year 1937, the value of United Kingdom exports and re-exports to Spain, the Canary Islands and Spanish ports in North Africa amounted in the aggregate to £3,900,000. Separate figures can be given for the outlying territories, but particulars are not available in respect of exports and re-exports to individual parts of peninsular Spain. Imports and the exchange to pay for them are rigidly controlled by both parties in the present conflict. In the absence of any complaints by United Kingdom exporters, it may be assumed that satisfactory arrangements are being made regarding sterling payments, and that such payments are not at the present time falling into arrears. I am, however, unable to state the amounts paid.
