§ 31. Mr. L. Smithasked the Secretary of State for War whether he can provide a list showing the principal steps taken during the past two years to encourage recruiting for the Regular and Territorial Armies, respectively, and, in particular, so far as concerns pay, conditions of service, relaxation of entry regulations, and publicity?
§ The Secretary of State for War (Mr. Hore-Belisha)The principal steps of this kind taken in 1936 and 1937 were explained in the Memoranda on Army Estimates for those two years [Cmd. 5109 and 5381], and in the course of Debate on those Estimates. [OFFICIAL REPORT; cols. 2353–60, Vol. 309, and cols. 1898–1909, Vol. 321.] When introducing Army Estimates for 1938, I propose to take the opportunity of bringing the information up-to-date, and for the latest developments I would ask my hon. Friend to be good enough to await that statement.
