HC Deb 22 February 1938 vol 332 cc184-5
42. Mr. Westwood

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he is aware that new and improved conditions of service for probation officers in England were brought into force on 1st July, 1937; that even higher scales of salaries were recommended by a Scottish Departmental Committee in 1928; and whether he can give any indication as to the date when he intends to bring the conditions of service of Scottish probation officers at least into line with those now prevailing in England?

Mr. Elliot

The answer to the first two parts of the question is in the affirmative. With regard to the third part of the question, the remuneration of probation officers in Scotland is fixed by the probation committee and the local authority, subject to my approval, within the limits prescribed by the Probation (Scotland) Rules, 1931. The whole position in regard to probation in Scotland is at present under review, and I am not in a position to make any statement on particular aspects of the case.
