HC Deb 22 February 1938 vol 332 c163
9. Mr. Mander

asked the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs whether he will give careful consideration to the possibility that the South African protectorates when transferred to the Union should be held under mandate by the Union?

The Under-Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs (Marquess of Hartington)

As I stated in my reply to a similar question by the hon. Member on 9th November, it is not thought that such an arrangement would be practicable or acceptable.

Mr. Mander

In the event of a proposal on those lines being put forward by the Government of South Africa, would the British Government be prepared to give it every consideration?

Marquess of Hartington

I have no doubt that His Majesty's Government would give careful consideration to any proposal coming from the Government of the Union.

Lieut.-Commander Fletcher

Are any conversations proceeding at this moment on this subject with the Union Government or are any intended?
