HC Deb 22 February 1938 vol 332 c186
57. Captain McEwen

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what steps the Government contemplate taking to help those Scottish fishermen who are deprived of their boats owing to the Herring Board's recent survey of fishing vessels?

Mr. Elliot

The present survey of fishing vessels is, I understand, being made by the Board of Trade under their ordinary powers for ascertaining that vessels of all classes are seaworthy and no provision for assistance has ever been made under such surveys. On the general question of the herring industry and fleet I am not yet in a position to make a statement.
