HC Deb 22 February 1938 vol 332 c192
52. Mr. Mabane

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether Entertainments Duty is collected in respect of any variety entertainments or floor-shows staged by hotels, restaurants, and bottle parties, in addition to the London Casino?

The Financial Secretary to the Treasury (Lieut.-Colonel Colville)

No, Sir.

Mr. Mabane

Does not my right hon. and gallant Friend think that these entertainments constitute a very unfair competition with the regular theatre, and will he not, in view of that fact, reconsider this matter to collect the Entertainments Duty from these shows?

Lieut.-Colonel Colville

The question of whether the duty can be collected in such cases is under examination, and I shall be very glad to have any first hand information which hon. Members can give me on the subject of such entertainments.
