1. Sir Nairne Stewart Sandeman

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India, whether the governor of Madras has taken action under the special responsibility vested in him by Section 52 (c) of the Government of India Act for the safeguarding of the legitimate interests of the members of the public services in regard to the reduction of the salaries of officers in the provincial services in Madras ordered by the Ministry in that province?

I am glad to be able to inform my hon. Friend that no occasion has arisen for the Governor of Madras to take action under the special responsibility referred to.

Have any reductions been made?

The Madras Government are not proposing to reduce the pay of holders of existing posts who were recruited to the provincial services before 1st April, 1937.

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India whether the Governor of Assam proposes to take any action in respect of the refusal of the legislative assembly in that province to allot funds for the payment of the salaries of the staff of the commissioners of divisions?

Yes, Sir; appropriate action will be taken.
