HC Deb 07 February 1938 vol 331 cc673-4
62. Mr. H. G. Williams

asked the Postmaster-General the estimated capital expenditure on the Southampton wireless rediffusion scheme; and whether it is proposed to raise a loan for the purpose?

Major Tryon

The estimated capital expenditure involved in this experimental scheme is £210,000, which will be met from moneys to be borrowed under the Post Office and Telegraph (Money) Act, 1937.

Mr. Williams

Can the right hon. Gentleman say why he has adopted this Socialistic scheme, because there is no necessity for it?

Major Tryon

This is being done in view of the Government's decision published in the White Paper on the report of the Ullswater Committee. It is an experiment made in the public interest, and no decision as to what will be done afterwards has been made.
