HC Deb 03 February 1938 vol 331 cc367-8
28. Mr. Day

asked the Home Secretary whether his attention has been drawn to the complaints made by the public against the growing number of cases in which the public are being imposed upon by employment agencies; and whether he will consider amending the Public Health Act, 1907, so as to give the public more protection against the operation of these agencies?

Sir S. Hoare

No, Sir. Inquiries were made by the Home Office recently from which it appeared that there was no demand for further legislation outside the London area.

Mr. Day

Is the Minister aware that many domestics are charged 32s. 6d. in addition to the large charges which the employers who consult these agencies have to pay, and does he not think that this is a ramp which ought to be stopped?

Sir S. Hoare

We have had no complaints from any authorities outside London.

Mr. Day

Ought not these poor, de-fenceless girls to be protected against a double charge?
