HC Deb 22 December 1938 vol 342 cc3067-8
25. Mr. Day

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Education whether he will state, according to the Board's statistics, the number of elementary schools in England and Wales in which no arrangements have been made for the supplying of milk to the children attending such schools?

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Education (Mr. Kenneth Lindsay)

On 31st March, 1938, the latest date for which figures are available, out of a total of 29,223 public elementary school departments in England and Wales 1,920 made no arrangements for the supply of milk. This represents 6.6 per cent. of the total number of departments, but the departments making no arrangements were for the most part small and contained less than 3 per cent. of the total number of public elementary school children.

Mr. Day

Are any steps being taken to see whether it is possible to supply milk to children in these schools?

Mr. Lindsay

The hon. Gentleman will be glad to know that the figure is getting steadily less.
