HC Deb 19 December 1938 vol 342 cc2452-3
15. Mr. McEntee

asked the Prime Minister whether he is aware that telegrams sent by the Home Office to the British passport office in Vienna and authorising the issue of visas to Jews and others desiring to visit this country are often delayed for many days before being delivered; can he say why these delays occur; and is he taking any steps to secure prompt delivery of such telegrams?

Mr. Butler

Inquiries made at Vienna do not reveal that there is any delay in the delivery of telegrams to the Passport Control Officer there.

16. Mr. McEntee

asked the Prime Minister the number of the staff employed at the British passport office in Vienna; and how many of them are of German nationality?

Mr. Butler

The executive staff of the Passport Control Office at Vienna numbers fifteen all of whom are British subjects. In addition there is a locally recruited staff of 10 none of whom, however, are in any way concerned with the practical side of the visa work of the office.

Mr. McEntee

Can the hon. Member say how many of the 10 are Germans?

Mr. Butler

In the case of the locally recruited staff they are probably all Germans.
