HC Deb 08 December 1938 vol 342 cc1342-3
25. Mr. Day

asked the Minister of Health whether he can state, according to the last official completed housing survey, the number of houses inspected and found to be overcrowded, giving separate figures of those found to be unfit for human habitation?

Mr. Elliot

The latest reports of the medical officers of health place the number of overcrowded houses at the end of 1937 at 265,000—a reduction of about 77,000 on the figure of the original survey of 1935–36. No records are available of how many of these houses were also unfit for human habitation.

Mr. Day

Can the Minister say what number of people are compelled to live in those overcrowded conditions?

Mr. Elliot

Not without notice.
