HC Deb 06 December 1938 vol 342 cc993-4
68. Mr. J. Griffiths

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that the tinplate, steel-sheet and ancillary industries of West Wales are now only employed at less than half their capacity, and that it is feared that the position may become even worse in the near future; and whether he can make any statement to indicate what steps he is taking to deal with the position?

Mr. Stanley

I am aware of the natural anxiety with which the position of these industries is viewed in West Wales. As the hon. Member knows, my hon. Friend the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Trade was present at a deputation recently received by my right hon. Friend the Minister of Labour from the local authorities of West Wales and the Swansea Local Employment Committee. He then promised to discuss with the industry the various points raised by the deputation, and this is now being done.
