9. Mr. Davidson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what local authorities in Scotland have made representations to be scheduled as Special Areas since August, 1938?

Mr. Colville

I have no record of any formal representations from individual local authorities since August. In July last I discussed with a deputation from the Convention of Royal Burghs representations submitted by that body with regard to the extension of existing provisions for assistance to industry. Further representations on this subject have recently been submitted by the Association of Counties of Cities in Scotland, and I have arranged to discuss the position with representatives of the association in Edinburgh on 16th December.

Were representations made by the Edinburgh Town Council on behalf of Leith to have it scheduled as a Special Area by the Minister of Labour?

Mr. Colville

I think the hon. Member is misinterpreting the nature of the representations which were made.

What were the representations made?

Mr. Colville

I could not state that in an answer to a supplementary question, but, as the hon. Member is aware, a deputation was received and the whole matter of employment in those areas was discussed.

And unemployment?

Does the right hon. Gentleman overlook the fact that the County of Linlithgow which is divided seeks to be included as one under the Special Areas regulations?
