HC Deb 06 December 1938 vol 342 c996
49. Mr. Bellenger

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury how many property societies registered under the Industrial and Provident Societies Act have not rendered their statutory returns up to the last convenient date; and how many prosecutions have been accordingly instituted?

The Financial Secretary to the Treasury (Captain Euan Wallace)

Eight societies have failed to furnish annual returns for 1937. In five cases the registry has been cancelled. Of the other three, the registrar has given notice in two cases of his intention to cancel the registry on the ground that the society has failed to furnish the return and, in the third case, a similar notice has been given on the ground that the society has ceased to exist. In addition, two societies which have submitted insufficient returns have been prosecuted, and one similar case is outstanding. In all, nine property societies have been prosecuted for failure to render annual returns for 1937, and have since furnished returns.

Mr. Bellenger

In the cases in which registry has been cancelled, is any prosecution to be undertaken?

Captain Wallace

Perhaps the hon. Gentleman will put that question down.
