HC Deb 28 April 1938 vol 335 cc309-10
68. Mr. Kirby

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that the Corporation of Liverpool have an agreement with the British Automatic Company, Limited, for the installation of weighing machines in the city's public lavatories; whether he is satisfied that these machines give the correct weight; and, if not, whether he can take legal action against those responsible and terminate the existing agreement?

Captain Wallace

The agreement to which the hon. Member refers has not previously been brought to my notice. If, as I assume, it relates to machines for weighing the person, the machines are not subject to statutory control except in areas where the local authority has obtained powers by special legislation. In such areas (which do not include Liverpool) the control is in the hands of the local authority and not of the Board of Trade. The matter is not, therefore, one in which I can intervene.
