HC Deb 12 April 1938 vol 334 cc915-6
33. Mr. Day

asked the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs whether he will make representations to the Canadian Government whereby a larger number of British people may be admitted to that Dominion, in order that they may be absorbed into the agricultural and industrial life of that Dominion?

Mr. M. MacDonald

At the time of the Imperial Conference last year it was indicated that the Canadian Government felt that the time had not arrived when they were in a position to co-operate with the United Kingdom Government in the resumption of Government-assisted migration. Since then nothing has occurred to give me reason to believe that the position in this respect has altered.

Mr. Day

Have these regulations been recently made to link up the trend of emigrants?

Mr. MacDonald

I am not quite certain what the hon. Member has in mind. Certain changes have taken place regarding emigrants to Australia, but nothing has occurred in the case of Canada.

Mr. Macquisten

Are there not a lot of people who we wish would emigrate?
