HC Deb 11 April 1938 vol 334 cc756-7
51. Mr. J. Griffiths

asked the Secretary for Mines whether the investigation conducted by His Majesty's inspectors into the environmental conditions at the Ammonford Colliery, and their relation to the incidence of silicosis at that colliery, is now completed; and whether it is intended to publish a report on the investigation or take some other steps in the matter?

The Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster (Earl Winterton)

I have been asked to reply as representing the Lord President. The inquiry into environmental conditions at the Ammanford Colliery, in which His Majesty's Inspectors of Mines have assisted, is part of the investigation into chronic pulmonary disease among coalminers which is being made under the direction of the Medical Research Council. The observations at Ammanford were recently concluded, and the records are now being carefully studied. It is proposed thereafter to extend the investigation to at least one further colliery, and the whole of the data will have to be examined before any report can be prepared.

Mr. Griffiths

May I ask whether a study of the general conditions revealed factors in the Ammanford pit which are material causes in producing silicosis, and whether this will be conveyed to the inspectors so that steps may be taken to prevent the rapid growth of the incidence of this disease in this particular coal mine?

Earl Winterton

The hon. Member will realise that I am dealing with a matter which is not connected with my own Department, but I shall have pleasure in putting his observations before the Lord President of the Council. He will appreciate, also, that while I must guard myself on that ground I can express the view that the publication of a premature report would not be advisable, and that it is better to await the result of the whole investigation. As to the special conditions at Ammanford if there be any as the hon. Member suggests, they will no doubt be conveyed to the Minister by the Inspector of Mines.

Mr. Griffiths

Will the Minister consult the Secretary for Mines to whom I put the question?

Earl Winterton

I will convey the hon. Member's wishes to the Lord President of the Council.
