HC Deb 06 April 1938 vol 334 c347
57. Mr. Owen Evans

asked the President of the Board of Trade what was the quantity of calcium carbide produced in Germany during the last calendar year or some other period for which information is available, giving the quantity produced with the use of electricity generated by water-power and electricity generated by other means, respectively?

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Trade (Captain Euan Wallace)

The desired information is not available from official German sources, but I understand that the production of calcium carbide in Germany during 1937 amounted to about 140,000 tons, of which roughly one-quarter was produced with the use of electricity generated by water power.
