HC Deb 05 April 1938 vol 334 cc190-1
53. Mr. Day

asked the Prime Minister particulars of the steps His Majesty's Ambassador in China has been called upon to take in the protection of British interests and trade in North China through conditions imposed on this country by Japan?

The Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (Mr. Butler)

Frequent representations have been made during the last few weeks to the Japanese Government and to the local Japanese authorities in China with a view to the protection of British interests in North China and to the maintenance and preservation of treaty rights. The matters principally dealt with have been the integrity of the Chinese Customs, the uniformity and proper application of the tariff, the currency and the institution of monopolies. His Majesty's Ambassadors in China and Japan will, of course, continue to watch the situation closely.

Mr. Day

Are these the only steps that have been taken?

Mr. Butler

It is a comprehensive survey.
