HC Deb 28 October 1937 vol 328 c248
57. Mr. Mander

asked the Minister of Health whether he is aware that, out of a total area of 39,000 acres controlled by public or semi-public bodies in the Peak district, only on some 3,864 acres, Longshaw Estate and Blacka and Burbage Moors, is adequate public access permitted; and whether he will take steps to secure for the public better opportunities for walking and recreation on these areas?

Sir K. Wood

I am not aware of the facts stated by the hon. Member, but I will make inquiries.

Mr. Mander

Should it not be the duty of these public authorities to set a good example to neighbouring landowners?

Sir K. Wood

I have been informed that most of the district has been dealt with by a joint committee, but a scheme has not yet been submitted, and I am not at the present moment able to say how far the proposals go in the direction indicated by the hon. Gentleman.
