HC Deb 21 October 1937 vol 327 cc30-1
58. Mr. Lunn

asked the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs whether he has any statement to make as to the relations between this country and the Irish Free State.

59. Sir P. Hannon

asked the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs whether he will make a statement on any developments which have taken place during the adjournment in the adjustment of outstanding differences between His Majesty's Government in the United Kingdom and His Majesty's Government in the Irish Free State.

Mr. M. MacDonald

There are no further developments to report regarding relations between the two Governments.

Mr. Lunn

Are we to take it that this Government is doing nothing whatever to try to bring about a solution of the difficulties between the Irish Free State and us?

Mr. MacDonald

I think the House appreciates that the gulf between the two Governments on the questions in dispute has been wide and will take a good deal of bridging.

Sir P. Hannon

Are we in this House to assume that any friendly gesture from the Irish Free State will be treated sympathetically by His Majesty's Government in the United Kingdom?

Mr. MacDonald

Certainly, Sir.

Mr. Churchill

Let us know when it comes.
