HC Deb 21 October 1937 vol 327 cc18-9
40. Mr. H. G. Williams

asked the President of the Board of Trade the index number of industrial production for the first six months of 1937 and what change this shows as compared with the same periods of 1936 and 1929, respectively?

The President of the Board of Trade (Mr. Oliver Stanley)

The index number of industrial production for the first six months of 1937 was 133.2, an increase of about 8 per cent. as compared with the same period of 1936. Owing to changes in the scope of the index a precise comparison with 1929 is not possible, but there would appear to have been an increase of between 20 and 25 per cent.

Mr. J. Griffiths

Do not the figures show that while the index of production is increasing the index of employment is lagging far behind?

Mr. Stanley

I am happy to say that both are increasing.
