HC Deb 22 November 1937 vol 329 c855
65. Mr. Gallacher

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether he has considered the memorandum submitted to him by the Dockyard Workers' Union of Malta on his recent visit to that Crown Colony alleging under-payment, bad housing conditions, and under-nourishment of the workers employed in the dockyards there; and whether it is proposed to take any steps to remedy the complaints contained therein?

Mr. Shakespeare

Careful consideration has been given to the written representations made to my right hon. Friend, during his recent visit to Malta, by the Dockyard and Imperial Workers' Union, and it is hoped to send a reply very shortly.

Mr. Gallacher

Is the Minister aware that through the very great efficiency of his Department, I have already had that answer, and is he now prepared to tell me whether the answer that they intend to send to Malta will be favourable to the demand of the dockyard employés?

Mr. Shakespeare

The hon. Gentleman had better await the reply, which will come very shortly.
