HC Deb 22 November 1937 vol 329 cc853-4
60. Mr. Petherick

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he has yet come to a decision about the setting up of a broadcasting station in Cyprus?

The Secretary of State for the Colonies (Mr. Ormsby-Gore)

As my hon. Friend will be aware from the statement made by the Chancellor of the Exchequer on 1st November, broadcasting in certain foreign languages including Arabic will be conducted by the British Broadcasting Corporation as soon as practicable. In these circumstances the question of utilising Cyprus in this connection no longer arises.

Mr. Petherick

Does the answer to which my hon. Friend referred include the broadcasting of reliable news in Italian, in view of the fact that an Italian broadcast made the other day accused the British Government of bombing women and children in the neighbourhood of Aden?

Mr. Ormsby-Gore

I do not think that arises out of this question.
