HC Deb 17 November 1937 vol 329 c399
63. Mr. Liddall

asked the Attorney-General whether, in view of the fact that in 1879 the house of Commons passed a resolution in favour of the abolition of the breach-of-promise law, he will now introduce legislation for this purpose?

The Attorney-General

The House of Commons 58 years ago in a thin House passed a resolution in favour of limiting the action of breach-of-promise in those cases where pecuniary loss was suffered by reason of the breach. I cannot regard this as justifying His Majesty's Government in occupying the time of the House with this subject at this time.

Mr. Liddall

While thanking the Attorney-General for his most encouraging reply, will he consider the matter favourably when the hon. Member for Lincoln (Mr. Liddall) does introduce legislation?

Mr. Bellenger

In giving his reply, did the Attorney-General consider the changed circumstances since 58 years ago, and is he aware that the House now contains a very large number of bachelors?
