HC Deb 15 November 1937 vol 329 c32
58. Mr. T. Smith

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Education whether, in view of the official announcement that in a period of three years the number of classes of over 40 pupils had fallen from 64,000 to 49,000, it is the policy of the Department to secure the total abolition of classes over 40; and whether it is proposed that local education authorities should act accordingly?

Mr. Lindsay

The policy of the Board is that all classes in senior elementary schools should be reduced to a maximum of 40 children in a class as soon as possible, but it is not practicable at present to apply this standard generally to classes for younger children. The Board's policy in this matter is well known to local education authorities.
