HC Deb 15 November 1937 vol 329 cc25-6
45. Lieut.-Commander Fletcher

asked the Prime Minister whether, during his forthcoming visit to Germany, the Lord President of the Council will be charged with any mission on behalf of the Government; and whether he will meet the head of the German Government?

The Prime Minister (Mr. Chamberlain)

I would refer the hon. and gallant Member to the answer given on Friday last in reply to a Private Notice Question by the right hon. Gentleman the Member for Wakefield (Mr. Greenwood).

Lieut.-Commander Fletcher

May I ask whether the proposal for this visit was initiated by the Foreign Secretary, and, if not, whether the Foreign Secretary has been kept fully informed throughout of what was proposed; and has everything been done with his full concurrence?

Mr. Speaker

That does not follow on the question.

Mr. A. Henderson

In spite of the statement made by the Chancellor of the Exchequer on Friday that the visit would be entirely private and unofficial, will the Prime Minister give an assurance that in due course a public and official statement will be made covering the conversations?

The Prime Minister

I have no difficulty in doing that at all.

Lieut.-Commander Fletcher

Will His Majesty's Ambassador in Berlin be present at any conversations which may take place?

Mr. Speaker

That does not arise out of the question.

Mr. Bellenger

Is this visit designed to take the place of the visit which was projected recently of the German Foreign Secretary to this country?

The Prime Minister

No, Sir.

Mr. Speaker

None of these questions arise out of the original question or answer.
