HC Deb 15 November 1937 vol 329 cc21-2
38. Mr. F. Anderson

asked the Postmaster-General whether labourers working for contractors engaged on the laying of underground telephone lines between Bootle and Millom, Cumberland, are paid the appropriate rate for overtime when the time worked has exceeded 48 hours in any one week?

Major Tryon

The answer is generally in the affirmative. I am, however, informed that in respect of one Sunday there was failure to comply with the terms of the relevant wage agreement. The contractors concerned are being requested to put matters right.

Mr. Anderson

Is the Postmaster-General prepared to see that the matter is put right, and will he give further attention to the position regarding overtime, apart from the Sunday work?

Major Tryon

I will certainly go into the matter. My information is that only two men were concerned and that they were paid rate-and-a-half instead of double pay, and I am calling the attention of the contractors to the matter.
